South Carolina's prison system has eliminated a more than $7 million deficit with furloughs and insurance savings.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's prison system has eliminated a more than $7 million deficit with furloughs and insurance savings.
Corrections Department executive director Bill Byars said Wednesday a deficit that's loomed over the agency since last fall has now been handled.
Byars says more than $5 million in savings will come from one-time reductions in medical care and workers' compensation for workers and by keeping vacant jobs open.
The agency is adding five furlough days for officers with ranks of lieutenant or higher and for non-security staff to save more than $1 million. Those workers will have a total of 10 days worth of pay taken from paychecks this year.
Security officer will have a sixth day added to the five furlough days they already must take.
