BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Commanders at Beaufort Marine Corps bases have ordered sailors and Marines to stay away from six local businesses that sell a synthetic marijuana.
The commanders of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and Navy Hospital Beaufort said in a news release Friday that the drug known as Spice and k2 can cause intoxication. Spice was banned by the Marines in February 2010.
Air station spokeswoman Lt. Sharon Hyland says local commanders contacted area businesses thought to be selling the substance and asked they not sell it to anyone in the military.
The half-dozen businesses that failed to comply are now off-limits. The businesses were not identified.
Similar bans have been imposed for Marines stationed at bases in North Carolina and Georgia.
