MANNING (WACH) -- There’s a new race brewing in Clarendon and Williamsburg counties.

We spoke to three democrats vying for House district seat 64.

City of Manning Mayor Kevin Johnson, Clarendon County Councilman Dwight Stewart  and Dr. Bernard Richburg Clarendon District one school board member.

"I've been on the town council of Summerton for twenty years. So I have twenty years in municipal services. I have been our county councilman for the past ten years,” says Dwight Stewart.

“Twelve years on our school board. Six years on city council prior to becoming mayor and this is my eleventh year as mayor,” Kevin Johnson.

Representative Cathy Harvin a democrat passed away December 4th from breast cancer.

She won South Carolina House seat 64 after her husband died in 2005.

The candidates say they have big shoes to fill.

“Before, Alex Harvin held the seat for twenty-five years so they both have set the standard very high for constituent services,” says Stewart.

"Cathy Harvin and her husband, they were all about public service and that’s what I’m about also,” says Johnson.

"Take the torch and continue to run in the path that she has already paved, which is having a concern for all the constituent house seat 64,” says Dr. Bernard Richburg.

The candidates tell us once elected they'll deal with the issues near and dear to their voters.

“Both parties are going to have to work together. We’re just in to dire straits to just not cooperate and see if we can’t solve our financial problems,” says Stewart.

“We need to put people to work,” says Johnson.

“Healthcare, education, tax reform and crime rates decreasing,” says Richburg.

We tried speaking with Alvin Greene he's also running on the democratic ticket but when we approached him, he tells WACH Fox he has no comment.

Republican Derry Beard and Sonny Sanders are also running for the seat.

The primary election is Tuesday February 15th.
