IRMO (WACH) -- South Carolina ranks ninth in the nation in the rate of women killed by men.
Charnel Redden, 25, is now apparently a part of that statistic.
On Saturday, Irmo Police and SLED agents found her body at a construction site near River Drive.
Redden had been missing since Monday. She was last seen at her estranged husband’s house on 128 Fallsbury Road.
Authorities believe Stacy Wade, 37, killed her after a dispute sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Wade’s arrest record shows several domestic violence charges.
“It was a tragedy that happened over there,” says Irmo Police Chief Brian Buck. “In relating it to the larger domestic violence situations, there is no reason for a victim of domestic violence to stay in abusive relationship.”
Buck adds that officers responded to Wade's home in the past.
“We certainly at times like this, like to get a message out to battered women to seek help if they are in a place where they recognize their situation is dangerous,” according to Executive Director Nancy Barton of Sistercare.
During the year, an estimated 9,000 women and children will utilize Sistercare's services. Sistercare is a program of services for battered women and their children residing in Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry and Richland counties in South Carolina.
While Redden’s family and friends mourn, officials hope her memory will remind people of a growing problem.
Wade is facing a murder charge and is currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, Sistercare offers a 24-hour service line: (803) 765-9428.
