WASHINGTON, D.C. (WACH) -- The former University of South Carolina student body president who was shot over the weekend is expected to be released from ICU Monday.
According to Andrew Gaeckle's father Steve, Andrew was walking home Friday night from the metro station in Washington, D.C when a man pulled out a gun and demanded money and his car keys. Mr. Gaeckle says Andrew complied with the robber’s request.
The robber then threw Andrew’s keys into the street and told Andrew to pick them up. Mr. Gaeckle says once Andrew picked up his keys he started to run and that’s when the robber shot him in the back.
Andrew is hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit at Washington Hospital Center. His father says, fortunately the bullet did not strike Andrew's spinal cord.
"The bullet went center back right hand side. Went through his liver through his diaphragm and punctured his lungs. The bullet is still in him. At this point surgery is too risky to take it out or not necessary."
Andrew graduated in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in International Studies. He was working in Washington as an analyst for a consulting firm.
