GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says a South Carolina electric bus manufacturer is a shining example of the innovative businesses President Barack Obama trumpeted in his State of the Union address.

LaHood told workers at Proterra's Greenville facility Thursday that the business' clean energy and green jobs exemplify what other businesses should strive for in their operations.

The Golden, Colo.-based company makes hybrid- and battery-powered buses for mass transit. The first bus rolled off the facility's temporary line last month, and officials expect Proterra to start work on its new South Carolina assembly plant in the spring.

LaHood toured Proterra's temporary facility Thursday and rode on one of the completed electric buses.
