COLUMBIA (WACH) -- More than 1,000 packed a Sumter church Wednesday to honor fallen Police Corporal Charles Nesbitt.
Nesbitt died in a car crash last week while on duty.
His patrol car was involved in a head-on collision with an SUV.
Nesbitt's family, friends, fellow officers and law enforcement officials from across the state all came out to celebrate his life.
Manning Police Corporal Alexander Dukes used to work with Nesbitt. He says corporal Nesbitt touched the lives of many people.
"Corporal Nesbitt was a big guy, of course, but he had a big heart also," Dukes said. "He was very gentle and is of good character and good integrity. Character and integrity will take you a long way in this job here."
Police Chief Patty Patterson describes Nesbitt as a man who was very professional and known for training other officers.
Flags at the State House were flying at half staff to honor Corporal Nesbitt. He was a ten year veteran of the Sumter Police Department.
