COLUMBIA (WACH) -- It will take another week before we'll find out if alcoholic energy drinks like Four Loko and Joose can continue to be sold in the Palmetto State.
Lawmakers with the House Judiciary Committee decided to postpone a bill aimed at making it illegal for stores to stock the caffeinated alcoholic drinks Tuesday.
Representative Laurie Funderburk is the author of House Bill 3246. She says the committee needs to look at the wording of the proposed bill.
According to Funderburk, the bill only targets malted beverage beer type drinks.
“This is only the pre-packaged pre-mixed formulas that are alcoholic energy drinks. This doesn’t apply to mixing drinks in bars and restaurants,” Funderburk says.
Under the bill, if the drinks are sold at stores in South Carolina, the owner could be fined and or lose their alcohol license for a period of two years.
Firefly Sweet Tea, one of the drinks that may be affected depending on the wording of the bill, is manufactured in South Carolina.
