COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Some South Carolina lawmakers don't like proposed fee increases for low-level nuclear material tied to tougher federal security rules.
The fees cover places like cancer treatment centers as well as companies testing roads.
A House panel rejected the increases last week. On Tuesday, the full Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee sent the bill back to a panel to get more testimony.
State Rep. Nathan Ballentine of Irmo chairs the panel that rejected the fees and asked the Department of Health and Environmental Control to cover increased costs by shifting money around in its budget instead of increasing fees.
But DHEC warns the state could lose oversight of the nuclear waste program and the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission would raise rates even more.
