COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Almost 100 middle school students used Martin Luther King Day to give back to the community.

They volunteered at the 6th annual Beloved Community Carnival at the State Museum.

The carnival featured games, crafts and activities celebrating the principles of Dr. King.

City Year helped put on the event.

"Today's the day they have the chance to give back, to sort of run this thing," says Kyle Harrington of City Year.  "They're running the games, walking around helping mascots, so this is their chance to own it, take responsibility and really give back."

City Year is a group of 1,200 young adults who volunteer in a dozen cities around the country including Columbia.

They spend time tutoring and mentoring at-risk students.
