COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina agency is telling people with links to the state's insurance program that their personal information may have been obtained illegally.

The state Budget and Control Board said Friday that it had mailed letters to people who may have been affected by a breach.

The agency said the breach occurred between November 8th and November 18th with illegal attempts to get information on about 5,600 individuals who participated in the employee insurance program. The agency said many of those individuals are dead.

The agency issued a news release about the breach after 6 p.m. and did not respond immediately to calls or e-mails.

The program's plans serve about 528,000 people including state employees, retirees and their dependents and survivors.
