CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) -- A Kershaw County sheriff's deputy has been injured by a man in a pickup truck.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says someone reported a stolen pickup truck late Tuesday afternoon. Matthews says a deputy spotted the vehicle a short time later and stopped it on U.S. 601 near Lugoff.

The deputy was struck by the truck and was treated and released from a Kershaw County hospital. The officer's name was not released.

Forty-nine-year-old Richard Daniel Altman was later found hiding in a trash bin and has been charged with theft and assault and battery with intent to kill.

Altman is being held in the Kershaw County jail. It was unclear if he has an attorney.
