COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Precipitation has ceased, but the ice remains across much of the Midlands.  However, anything that melts will refreeze tonight.  Power outages and travel problems will continue into Wednesday.

Despite the fact temperatures rose above freezing Tuesday, spotty areas of black ice may remain all the way into Wednesday morning on secondary and neighborhood roads, bridges and overpasses.  the problem is not the major interstates which for the most part are drivable.

SCE&G is reporting sporadic power outages across the Midlands Tuesday evening.  Overall, the threat has lessened, but the loss of power combined with overnight plunging into the 20 maycause a dangerous situation.

Derrec Becker with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division says secondary roads are the main concern tonight.

SCDOT is working hard to clear roadways, but the State Highway Patrol urges motorists to stay off the roadways if they don't have to travel.

Snow and ice on grassy and metal surfaces may take several days to melt.

Various counties recorded three to seven inches of snow during the winter weather blast.  The highest totals were in the northeastern portions of Newberry county that saw 8 to 10 inches of snow.   Richland and Lexington counties have seen four-plus inches of snow.  The Northern Midlands are seeing the best snow accumulation.  However, the southern Midlands, Orangeburg, Aiken, Calhoun and Clarendon counties, are already seeing some ice accumulation.
