COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The Eau Claire Promise Zone in Columbia gets some major support from a nationally recognized community leader.

Friday Geoffrey Canada spoke to hundreds at Brookland Baptist's Banquet and Conference Center.

Mr. Canada founded the Harlem’s Children Zone which is a community-based organization aimed at promoting healthy development of children in central Harlem.

The Eau Claire Promise Zone would also like to mirror Canada’s vision here in Columbia.

"We've been talking about wants going on here in Columbia over the course of the last six or seven months. I feel that there is alot of infrastructure in place for Columbia to do a successful replication of our work in Harlem, says Geoffrey Canada."

Mayor Steve Benjamin presented Eau Claire Promise Zone leaders with a fifty thousand dollar check to help with the establishment of a program similar to Geoffrey Canada here in the Midlands.
