CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Organizers of events marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in South Carolina say the commemorations may spark differences of opinion and evoke painful memories.

But the organizers, who meet with reporters in Charleston on Wednesday to outline their plans, say the anniversary also brings the potential for dialogue.

Officials from the Fort Sumter National Monument along with the Fort Sumter-Fort Moultrie Historical Trust, the City of Charleston and other groups will discuss plans for sesquicentennial commemoration.

The news conference comes just five days shy of the 150th anniversary of South Carolina's signing of the Ordinance of Secession.

That event will be marked with a gala in Charleston -- an event the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People plans to protest.
