COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Two South Carolina lawmakers want to outlaw driving drunk on a moped.

Two Spartanburg Republicans prefiled a bill Tuesday that would allow moped drivers to be charged with driving under the influence. Reps. Derham Cole and Eddie Tallon say they think tightening the moped laws would make roadways safer.

State law specifically excludes mopeds as a motor vehicle.

Law enforcement supporting the change include the head of the state Department of Public Safety.

Tuesday was the first day that House members could prefile legislation. Senators began filing last week. The prefiling period gives voters an early look at what legislators will focus on when they return in January.

Prefiling wraps up Dec. 15. The Legislature returns Jan. 11.
