COLUMBIA (WACH) -- A cold spell has pushed into the Midlands and is expected to stick around for a few days.

Forecasters predict highs in the 40's for the beginning of the week warming to the low 50's by Friday as rain pushes into the area for the weekend when average temperatures will return.

WACH Fox Weather Anchor Katy Kramer says lows this week are expected to drop well below the freezing mark.

The same system is responsible for causing snow in the higher elevations of North Carolina all the way to the Midwest.

Greensboro, North Carolina saw at least three inches of fresh snow.

Schools in the storm's path were canceled Monday as parts of West Virginia braced for nearly 18 inches of snow and high winds.

Officials are reminding pet owners to bring your dogs and cats indoors when temperatures fall.
