COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Black Friday is over and now shoppers are turning their attention to Cyber Monday.
After a strong showing in stores over the Thanksgiving weekend, online retailers are pulling out their tricks of the trade to attract consumers. And the deals are just as good.
"Just like Black Friday, the deals are there today for those who got up early enough to hit some of the stores online," explains USC retail professor Dr. Richard Clodfelter.
Cyber Monday has grown by a large percentage over the past decade. In 2005, sales clocked in at around $608 million jumping to over $846 million in 2008 before slowing with the economy in 2009. Experts say it won't be long before we break that $1 million mark.
Among some of the creative sales this Monday, major discounts and free shipping remain the most enticing.
And while Cyber Monday falls on a work day for most, that doesn't seem to stop shoppers from filling their online shopping carts.
The National Retail Federation says over half of workers have internet access making the deals available to over 70 million people nationwide.
But shoppers looking to skip the long lines and rowdy crowds still have plenty to be cautious of online.
Officials warn of internet scams and urge consumers to do their research on a site before entering credit card information.
Another concern is ordering over a secure connection.
"Chances are if you're at a coffee shop and you're trying to order something and give your credit card number there is that chance it could be intercepted," Clodfelter says.
But despite the big savings, and spending, online purchases only account for around 10 percent of all retail shopping in the U.S.
