COLUMBIA (WACH) - Before some folks in the Midlands even got to the turkey, they were burning off some calories for a good cause.

More than a thousand runners were pounding the pavement for the annual Turkey Day 5K well before noon Thursday.  Proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands.

"This is helping them learn healthy eating habits, healthy excercise habits, but also giving back to the community, and that's what we're about," says Carter Clark of the Boys and Girls Club.

There are more than 30 Boys and Girls Club locations in the Midlands.  The race is a major fundraiser for the organzation's after school programs.

"It's a lot of fun," says runner Rob O'Dell.  "It goes to a good cause and we like to do things charitable wise as a family."
