COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's outgoing school chief says he's proud of the innovations and progress made during his tenure in spite of the Great Recession.

Superintendent Jim Rex's single term in office has been marked by an expansion of choices within the public school system. Rex says South Carolina has become a national leader in single-gender, Montessori, and online learning. Other options include charter and magnet schools.

The state's lone Democratic statewide office holder says more public innovation is needed.

Rex says his biggest regret is the defeat of a bill that would have required school districts to expand choices. He says a non-voluntary movement would've put the state miles ahead.

Rex says he has no regrets about not seeking a second term in the job. He lost a bid for the gubernatorial nomination.
