COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's public schools chief is viewing an education documentary and leading a discussion on education reform in the state capital.

Superintendent Jim Rex will host a 45-minute talk about education reform.

Rex will leave office in January after a single term. He has opposed proposals to use tax credits to help parents afford private tuition, but he has worked to increase education options within public schools.

The documentary "Waiting for 'Superman'" from "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim places much of the blame of bad schools on union rules. It suggests that kids receive a superior education in charter schools without unions.

In South Carolina, teachers are not unionized.

The 5:30 p.m. showing at Columbia's Nickelodeon Theater is sold out.
