IRMO (WACH) -- Irmo officials are looking to snuff out smoking in the workplace.

The town is joining other Midlands communities by approving a smoking ban.

However, the measure is somewhat of a compromise.

According to Councilman Barry Walker, officials have been trying to pass a smoking ban for nearly two years.

Tuesday night, council reached an agreement.

The ordinance doesn't apply to any bar, restaurant, office or store where smoking inside was permitted before the ban.

Businesses that will continue to allow smoking will have to post a sign.

"It puts the public in notice that, hey, you are walking into a smoking environment and you can choose as a consumer to go in there or not go in there," Walker explains.

Any new business that open up shop in the area will have to follow the no smoking ban.
