COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster says his water dispute with North Carolina is nearing a settlement.
McMaster told The Associated Press Friday a bi-state commission unanimously adopted a preliminary settlement agreement among South Carolina, North Carolina, Duke Energy and the Catawba River Water Supply Project.
McMaster sued in 2007 to stop a plan that would have allowed two Charlotte, N.C., suburbs to pump millions of gallons of water daily from the Catawba and Yadkin river basins. McMaster said the drawdown would deprive South Carolina of its equitable share of the water.
The Catawba River travels 225 miles through the Carolinas and supplies drinking water for more than 1 million people. McMaster says the court case will continue until the settlement is finalized.
