COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina Army National Guard unit is returning after eight months in Afghanistan.

Members of the 1st Battalion, 178th Field Artillery, began returning to an Army base near Indianapolis, Ind., on Sunday. The soldiers are taking care of paperwork and getting health screenings.

Army officials say some soldiers could get back to their Georgetown base as early as this weekend.

The unit was posted near Kabul and provided security for engineers, civil affairs and medical personnel.
