CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The state Transportation Department says it will consider adding toll lanes on Interstate 526 to help ease traffic congestion around Charleston.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Saturday that toll roads will be among a number of options considered by a traffic-release study that will begin in January.

The toll lanes would be on about eight miles of the interstate from Interstate 26 to U.S. 17 south of Charleston.

Highway officials say that stretch of road is at capacity with average daily traffic of up to 78,000 vehicles and the coming of a Boeing manufacturing facility is expected to make traffic worse.

If the toll option is chosen, it would mean new adding lanes added to the existing road.
