WEST COLUMBIA (WACH) - For years Mickie Blitchington would open her mailbox on the first of the month and receive her monthly social security stipend. That changed late last month when she moved into her West Columbia trailer.
"I went to the mailbox Monday with the land lady," says Blitchington. "We checked all the A's, opened all the mailboxes in the A section, no mail for me what so ever."
Blitchington spent most of the week looking for answers, calling the social security office and post office. "Somebody is not doing something right, and I'm getting hurt by it, and I don't know what to do."
Chris Jenkins with the social security office says these situations can be avoided. He recommends filling out change of address forms with the post office as soon as you move.
If your check arrives at your old address it may take a few days before the social security office realizes it. To avoid these hassles, Jenkins recommends signing up for a debit card or direct deposit.
Blitchington says this information doesn't help her now, she badly needs the money. "No medicine, no food, no rent, no money to go buy these things, nobody I can borrow money from."
We put Blitchington in touch with Jenkins, he says he's happy to help her.
