SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Republican Trey Gowdy has been elected to Congress.

Gowdy beat Democrat Paul Corden and several third-party candidates Tuesday in South Carolina's heavily conservative 4th District, anchored by Greenville and Spartanburg.

Gowdy is the chief prosecutor in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties. He says he took advantage of people frustrated with government who wanted a new voice in Washington.

In June Gowdy knocked off incumbent Bob Inglis in the GOP primary with 79 percent of the vote.

Inglis blamed his loss on the district moving farther right and did not make an endorsement in the general election.
