COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Republicans in South Carolina fared well from the top of the ticket to the bottom.  Voters elected the state's first female governor and the first black Republican congressman since reconstruction.

Lexington Republican State Representative Nikki Haley defeated Democrat State Senator Vincent Sheheen in a closer than expected race.

Congressman Joe Wilson won a 5th term in Congress, defeating Democrat Rob Miller in the 2nd congressional district.

House Majority whip James Clyburn retained his seat in congress routing Republican Jim Pratt in the 6th congressional district, however long time Congressman John Spratt was unseated by Republican Mick Mulvaney.  Spratt, the chairman of the budget committee, was elected to represent the 5th congressional district in 1982.

Tim Scott will be South Carolina's first black congressman from the GOP since construction, beating a host of challengers to represent the 1st congressional district.

Senator Jim DeMint won a second term after soundly defeating Democrat Alvin Greene and Green Party Candidate Tom Clements.
