COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. will ask state regulators for higher rates to pay for expansion of its nuclear plant in Fairfield County.

Multiple media outlets reported the utility will ask to recover some money the South Carolina Supreme Court rejected in August.

SCE&G says it needs between $150 million and $200 million to complete plans for the two new nuclear reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville.

State regulators have approved plans for SCE&G to raise rates gradually until the second new reactor starts in 2019. The overall additional cost would be about $40 a month for the typical homeowner.
