COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Their television ads may be acrimonious, but the candidates in South Carolina's 5th District showed they could disagree civilly.
Democratic U.S. Rep. John Spratt and Republican challenger Mick Mulvaney debated for an hour Friday at the South Carolina ETV studios in Columbia.
Mulvaney said the federal stimulus package did little to get the United States out of the Great Recession, while Spratt argued it kept the economic downturn from becoming more of a disaster.
Spratt said the health care reform law passed last year wasn't perfect, but had more good points than bad.
Mulvaney says health care is not a fundamental right and the law needs to be scrapped.
The debate will be shown 1 p.m. Sunday on SCETV stations across the state.
