COLUMBIA (WACH) -- With the holidays just around the corner, the Richland County Sheriff's Department wants you to be thinking about safety.

The department hosted a personal safety demonstration at the Best Buy on Two Notch Road Friday.

Deputies showed citizens how to become educated about crime prevention and to be aware of their surroundings.

"Try to be aware of your surroundings when you walk out of a business," explains Deputy Santanna Robbins.  "Keep your eyes and try not to have too many bags in your hand at one time.  And also be aware of everyone else; not answering your cell phone or fumbling in your purse as you head to your car."

Deputies were also showing consumers how to guard their personal information at the cash register.

Officers say to keep credit cards and identification away from others.

You can contact the department's Community Action Team to receive free crime prevention tips and training.  You can call 576-3118 for more information.
