LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) -- A Lancaster County land deal is now a focal point of the congressional race in South Carolina's Fifth District.
U.S. Rep. John Spratt is running an ad blaming the failure of a 500-acre development near Indian Land on his Republican challenger Mick Mulvaney.
Spratt's ad says Mulvaney secured $30 million in bonds for the land, sold it for a $7 million profit, then didn't keep promises to stay involved in the project.
Mulvaney said Thursday he never made any promises. The businessman compared it to someone selling their home and then being blamed when the next buyer didn't follow the neighborhood's covenants.
He also denies making $7 million selling the land, but wouldn't release how much money he made on the deal.
Spratt is seeking a 15th term.
