ORANGEBURG COUNTY (WACH) -- An explosive event is taking place in Orangeburg County this week.

Wednesday afternoon, a team of bomb specialists took part in a robot relay course as part of the second annual Bomb Squad Olympics in Bowman.

Officials with the Olympiad say not only is it a fun event, but it also serves as a valuable training exercise to hone attendees' skills in preparation for actual emergencies.

"The more stick time you have with the robot, the more proficient you will become, so it's very important that these guys have uninterrupted access to this robot for as long as it takes them to solve the problem," explains Robert Vonloewenfeldt of the Savanna Police Department.

The three day event also includes a 100 yard bomb suit relay race and a test of experts' abilities to extract bombs from vehicles.
