COLUMBIA (WACH) -- USC’s Office of University Housing and Office of Fire Safety, along with the Columbia City Fire Department, conducted a fire safety and awareness fair Wednesday morning.
The fair featured a model dorm room that students could inspect and identify the fire hazards.
Officials say items such as oversized light bulbs, candles, and extension cords are just a few of the common hazards students have in their dorm rooms. Today's fair also offering a fire extinguishing lesson, allowing students to put out a small flame using a fire extinguisher.
Kirsten Kennedy, Director of University Housing, says she hopes the fair served as an educational moment for every student on campus.
"We want to give them information to make good decisions when the fire alarm goes off in their dorm rooms or in their off campus residence either way," says Kennedy.
The CFP ignited the “dorm room” to demonstrate how quickly typical household items burn.
