COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The Republican and Democratic candidates for South Carolina's 4th District have as many points of agreement as contention in their debate in Columbia.

Republican prosecutor Trey Gowdy and Democratic businessman Paul Corden said Tuesday during a debate taped for broadcast Sunday that they both favor limiting government to its essential functions and oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.

The two disagreed on how the U.S. should end the war in Afghanistan. Corden is a Vietnam veteran who favors a definite pullout date with a small force left behind to guarantee the Afghans can safely run their own country. Gowdy says he thinks U.S. troops will have to be there for a very long time to keep al-Qaeda forces from regaining control of the country.
