COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A national gay rights group wants U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint to apologize for again referencing his own six-year-old comments that homosexuals should not be teaching in public schools.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force executive director Rea Carey said Tuesday it was irresponsible of DeMint to reassert his position during a rally Friday in Spartanburg.

During a 2004 debate with Democrat Inez Tenenbaum, DeMint said he agreed with a state GOP platform item that says gays should not teach in public schools. Several days later, DeMint also said single, pregnant women with live-in boyfriends also should not be teachers.

A spokesman for DeMint's Senate office said Tuesday the Republican was merely making a point about attacks on people who speak out on morality issues.
