COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- The political action committee of South Carolina Citizens for Life has endorsed Republican Nikki Haley for governor.
Haley's campaign announced the endorsement Monday, days after two GOP activists questioned her vote last year on a proposed change to an abortion bill.
Citizens for Life director Holly Gatling says Haley scored a 100 on its 19-question election survey. She says Democrat Vincent Sheheen has voted with the anti-abortion group and has "never been hostile to our issues." But he did not return the survey, so the group backed the candidate who put it in writing.
Last Thursday, Haley was asked why she voted to forbid employers from firing women who miss work because of the bill's initial mandate that women make two trips to an abortion clinic.
Haley picked up endorsements earlier this year from the South Carolina chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster.
Sheheen is backed by Superintendent of Education Jim Rex, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and Former South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges.
Sheheen was also backed by a group of women supporters Monday.
