COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Two South Carolina National Guard soldiers were killed in Afghanistan Friday.
Adjutant General, Major General Stanhope Spears announced Monday that 32-year-old Specialist Luther Rabon of Lexington and 48-year-old Staff Sergeant Willie Harley of Aiken died after an IED was detonated near their vehicle.
“Specialist Rabon and Staff Sergeant Harley were serving their country with honor and pride," Spears explains. "The South Carolina National Guard has lost two more members of our family. My thoughts and prayers go out to their families and friends."
Rabon and Harley were both deployed in July with the 1221st Engineer Clearance Company out of Graniteville and Batesburg. The soldiers' mission was to clear roadways for military convoys according to the National Guard.
