COLUMBIA (WACH) --
Afghan authorities are touring South Carolina Department of Corrections facilities and meeting with agency officials to learn more about how to run prisons safely and efficiently on a shoestring budget.
This is the second group to visit from Afghanistan in the past four years. Officials from Iraq, Kurdistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo also have visited and learned more about S.C. Corrections, which spends less per inmate than almost every other state in the country.
The visits have been organized through the U.S. Department of State.
"We are honored the State Department is holding up the S.C. Department of Corrections as a model to be copied," Corrections Director Jon Ozmint said. "This is the safest and most efficient correctional system in the country. Instead of allowing budget restraints to hold us back, we’ve found new ways to excel, from our lowest in the nation food costs to our record setting educational programs."
