COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina foundation wants to sell a World War II bomber it doesn't have the money to protect.
The State newspaper reported the Celebrate Freedom Foundation wants to sell the B-25C bomber pulled from Lake Greenwood in 1983. The plane crashed during a 1944 training mission.
It has been stored in Columbia since 1992 and was used as a centerpiece for three reunions for the Doolittle Raiders, who bombed Japan early in World War II and had trained in Columbia.
Foundation executive director Larry Russell says the organization doesn't have the $1 million to stabilize the hanger. Officials say it would take $3 million to properly restore the hanger.
Russell says museums in several states have expressed interest, but haven't made a firm offer. Some business leaders hope to keep the plane in the state.
