NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- North Charleston City Council has given preliminary approval for casino boats to operate from the city.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that council voted Wednesday to allow the boats to operate.

Mayor Keith Summey says the boats would not introduce gambling to the area, since the state already has a lottery. Summey says the city could benefit from fees and taxes. He notes the city gets no money from the lottery.

Councilman Bobby Jameson wants to delay operation of the boats until city residents vote on the idea, but that that failed to get enough support from the council.

City officials say there's enough room south of Riverfront Park for three companies to operate.
