COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The Richland County Sheriff's Department is giving fugitives the opportunity to safely surrender on Wednesday.

The department's annual Amnesty Day gives those who are wanted for Family Court bench warrants the chance to turn themselves in and avoid going directly to jail.

Sheriff Leon Lott says around 1,400 letters were mailed out.  He adds that the event typically attracts more than 100 fugitives.

Those wanted can make an appointment to turn themselves in by calling the warrant division at (803) 576-2167.
