COLUMBIA -- COLUMBIA (WACH) -- It's was all things green at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center Tuesday. The quiet hum of alternative fuel vehicles is a sound James Poch hears everyday. He drives a converted Toyota Prius and can't complain about the cars performance.
"I do get fabulous mileage locally. And when I drove from Charleston to here, I had gas to do it," Poch says.
His car runs on both electricity and hybrid gasoline, whichever he needs to get where he's going. He’s the Executive Director at Plugging Carolina, a non-profit aiming to educate the public about green options.
Poch says, “we're hoping in addition to the different choices a consumer normally has that they will say hey, what's good for the environment."
"There is a financial objective of having alternative fuel vehicles as part of a fleet, as part of your commute in," says Clean Cities Grant Coordinator Andrew Epting.
Clean Cities and the South Carolina Energy Office are the organizers of the "ride and drive" exhibit. Epting says he hopes this opportunity excites and educates the public.
“Certain fuels like propane’s, CNG, electricity, as an operating expense are cheaper over the course of a lifetime or lifetime of a vehicle than gasoline," says Epting.
Poch stresses if you're looking to reduce your environmental footprint ask questions before you buy. "You do want to do your homework; you want to find out what's best for your family and your own driving habits."
