COLUMBIA (WACH) - Two beams that were part of the World Trade Center Tower One arrived at the Lexington County Office Complex Wednesday afternoon, straight from New York City.
Daniel Hennigan of the Lexington Rotary hopes to use them as part of the Lexington County, South Carolina First Responders Wall of Remembrance Forever Memorial.
“A year ago I did an application and on August 12th of this year they sent me a letter and told me I would be awarded steel. Today is the beginning of the next project to build a memorial,” said Hennigan.
Hennigan and three local firefighters made a four day trip to New York City to get the beams.
While they were there Hennigan said they toured Ground Zero and hangers, where parts of the towers remain.
Hennigan said he wants to complete the memorial by September 11th of next year - and said it will take a few months to decide where it will be located.
“This wall will represent all first responders, not just fire and police, but all EMT, all branches of the fire services. We are looking at a couple of site but we don’t think the site will be located for another couple of months.
For now - the beams will go into storage until the memorial is created.
