LAKE WYLIE, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's longest-serving congressman says voters should choose experience and give him a 15th term, while his challenger says it's time for change.
Democratic U.S. Rep. John Spratt and freshman state Sen. Mick Mulvaney held their first debate on Tuesday at Rivers Hills Country Club. More than 200 people attended the event in a gated Lake Wylie community just south of Charlotte, N.C.
Mulvaney points to Spratt's support of the federal health care overhaul as a reason for replacing him. Mulvaney says repealing the new law should be a priority.
Spratt says he made the right decision to vote for it, though he adds the law needs to be tweaked.
Video and tape recordings were not allowed. Spratt says he initially made the request because he wanted an informal debate.
