COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- Approximately one hundred World War II veterans will be heading home  Sunday afternoon after being in Columbia for five days for the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge national conference.

Most of the veterans spent their Sunday morning at the Main Street United Methodist Church.  The church invited the conference attendees, along with other past and present service men of the Armed Forces, to hear a special sermon from Maj. Gen. Douglas Carver, chief of chaplains for the United States Army.

Carver, speaking to a crowded congregation, thanked the veterans for their service and reminded folks of the importance of their contribution. "These few days that we've had in Columbia have been gentle reminders of how they're to continue to be loved and remembered by the people of the United States and Nations throughout the world," Carver said.

The Battle of the Bulge, a 40-day battle, began on December 16, 1944.  Reports say it was the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought by the U.S. Army.
