Traffic fatalities down, officials step up to keep it that way

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- There is some welcomed news as the Highway Patrol gears up for the holiday weekend.

Officials are seeing a record low in the number of fatalities during the 100 deadly days of summer.

One-hundred-seventy-seven people have died on South Carolina roads during this year's period.

That's compared to 255 at this time last year.

To help continue the downward trend, the Highway Patrol is beefing up it's presence on the road during the 78 hour Labor Day travel weekend.
