COLUMBIA (AP) -- A former University of South Carolina president who's been pushing for an expansion of the medical school to Greenville is being paid more than $200,000 a year by the Greenville Hospital System.

The State newspaper reported Thursday former USC president Andrew Sorensen is being paid $236,000 by USC as a medical school faculty member and $210,000 by the Greenville hospital where the expansion would be located.

Sorensen retired as president in 2008. He's written editorials in favor of the expansion. Sorensen says he started working with the Greenville Hospital System while president and is just continuing that effort.

USC says taxpayers won't have to pay for the expansion since the Greenville Hospital System will pay up to $39 million over the next 10 years.

Some lawmakers are skeptical of that promise.
