COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Millions of eggs have been taken off the shelves and a dozen states are feeling the effects of contaminated eggs. For restaurant owners massive recalls can lead to tough times.
“You always have to make sure your food is clean and safe even if it’s something out of your control,” says Flight Deck Owner Ted Stambolitis.
Stambolitis is meeting weekly with vendors to make sure tainted eggs don't make it through his doors.
But prices are skyrocketing. Stambolitis says he's already seen a 30 to 40 percent increase and he expects another 30 cent increase for a dozen eggs.
Stambolis says the rising prices will definitely affect him financially.
“Our customers have come to expect the menu items that we produce and we try to offer the menu items regardless if we make money,” adds Stambolitis.
While owners like Stambolitis may see an effect on the bottom line, many customers in the Midlands don't seem to be concerned about the recall hitting the palmetto state.
“I don't order sunnyside up everything else is fine, I don’t worry it's been cooked I'm happy with it II don't feel threatened at all,” said one Flight Deck diner.
Stambolitis says he has not seen a change in the way customers order but adds right now is no time to change prices.
“In this economy we can't afford to go up on our prices every ones very careful on how much money they spend when they eat out,” says Stambolitis.
