MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's north coast is known as the Grand Strand because of its sandy beaches. But it's also getting a reputation as a Green Strand.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported Tuesday there are a number of environmental projects under way to save energy and ease pollution.

The city of Conway has replaced almost all of its police cars with more fuel-efficient vehicles and has contracted to build the area's first solar power plant.

North Myrtle Beach has seven demonstration wind turbines to provide power to recharge electric vehicles.

A grant is also being used to build as many as 10 electric vehicle recharging stations in Horry County. Both Conway and Myrtle Beach are replacing light bulbs with more energy efficient bulbs.
